Born Barbara Ray McKenzie Brown in Dalmellington, Scotland, she began singing professionally at a young age with local beat groups like Tommy Trousdale & The Sundowners. Her life shifted dramatically in 1964 when she married South African photographer Jack Fenix, prompting her emigration to Brakpan, South Africa. Initially working a day job as a corporate clerk, her immense vocal talent was discovered by musician and producer Jody Wayne, who steered her from pop toward Country & Western music.
Her 1970 debut single "Like I Do" was an immediate success, but it was her 1973 cover of Tammy Wynette's "I Don't Wanna Play House" that launched her into superstardom, holding the top spot in South Africa for six weeks and entering the Australian Top 10. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Ray secured multiple gold records for hits like "Silver Threads and Golden Needles." She also dominated the prestigious SARIE Awards, winning Vocal Group accolades alongside fellow country icons Bobby Angel and Lance James.
